I’ve never dealt with physical domestic abuse; my abuse comes more from just the way that I treat myself and my own body. I always feel like I’m almost willing to throw myself out of a building for the sake of art or for the sake of my career. That’s what this song is about: my life experience of having a body that is quite fragile. It’s not supposed to do a lot of the stuff that I make it do. There’s all this stress and all these physical challenges that I subjected myself to over and over. So ‘Black Eye’ is about how it almost starts to feel natural doing that. And it starts to feel like a high—and that’s when it gets really scary, when these things that are definitely bad for you start to feel good in a way. But there’s also wit in those lyrics and in the idea of, like, ‘Yeah, bring it on.’
lyrics
[Verse 1]
Something bad coming this way
Darling, don't look back with every fucker
Keep your eye on the path or it'll drive you mad
The world goes 'round
Makes me dizzy but I hold my ground
When I get nauseous I just gag it down
Pound for pound
I gag it down, I gag it down
[Chorus]
Oh, hit me, hit me with that super pain
'Cause a hit feels like I'm dancin' in the rain
Gimme that beat
There's no need to cry, it's just a black eye, yeah
Hit me, hit me with that super bass
'Cause I want tonight to slap me in the face
Gimme that beat
There's no need to cry, it's just a black eye, yeah
[Verse 2]
Somеthing bad already happened
Doеs that make you sad?
I'm gonna burn it 'cause I don't get mad
I'm a modern dog, ah
Collar crime, year on a leash, it makes a nasty mind
I'm sorry Mister Fister, if I bite
It's just spite
I will bite, I will bite
[Chorus]
Oh, hit me, hit me with that super pain
'Cause a hit feels like I'm dancing in the rain
Gimme that beat
There's no need to cry, it's just a black eye, yeah
Hit me, hit me with that super bass
'Cause I want tonight to slap me in the face
Gimme that beat
There's no need to cry, it's just a black eye, yeah
[Post-Chorus]
Oh, yeah
No need to cry, it's just a black eye
Oh-oh
There's no need to cry, it's just a black eye
[Bridge]
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la
Eye, eye, eye, ooh
Black, black, black, black eye
Eye, eye, eye
Give me a black eye
Eye, ooh, just a black eye
[Outro]
Little baby, just dry your tears and say
A black eye never goes away
Little baby, just dry your tears and say
A black eye never goes away
Little baby, just dry your tears and say
A black eye never goes away

Every minute of this is production perfection — filled with clever and beautiful textures, plus rich and full throated vocal performances. So simultaneously challenging and gorgeous and captivating. I feel suspended in each moment when I listen to this spective
I think it's difficult to write songs about something other than romantic love, and still be able to communicate the intensity with which those feelings can hit a person. Some of the entries on this album are fantastic examples of this niche. dani_bloop
Alvvays has always been great, but with this album they took it to the next level. Every one of these songs is lodged in my brain now, permanently (in a good way). s. moxley
