I’ve been trying to figure out who this song is about. It just flowed sort of through me when I co-wrote it with my partner, George Pimentel. I got a sense that she was like this sort of vengeful figure who’s maybe kind of witty. But now I think of ‘the girl with no face’ as this presence that emerged as I was alone in a room for years writing this record. She’s like this layer of myself, or this ghost or this voice in the room with me that could be heard but not seen, and she gave me the strength and the aggression that I needed to get through this project. She’s my invisible muse—my cunty muse!
[Verse 1]
She's never done, this is her funhouse
And she's the one, but you'll never find out
And look at you, you're such a mess
You want more but you end up with less (Ha)
[Pre-Chorus]
Torment the girl, she can ruin your world
Don't get in her way, get in her way
[Chorus]
(Ooh-ooh-ooh) I'm the girl with no face
(Ooh-ooh-ooh) You could learn a thing or two
(Ooh-ooh-ooh) Then you're gonna thank me
(Ooh-ooh-ooh) Say, "I never met a girl like you"
[Post-Chorus]
Aah-aah-aah (Shh)
Like you, ah-aah-aah (Shh)
[Bridge]
Shh
Aah
Shh
Hey
Ah-ah
[Verse 2]
She has no friends
Up on the catwalk (Catwalk)
And she is sharp
So shut your talk-talk (Talk-talk)
If you behave you get to play
But don't be greedy, she can spot a fake (Ha)
[Pre-Chorus]
Torment the girl, she can ruin your world
Don't get in her way, get in her way
[Chorus]
(Ooh-ooh-ooh) I'm the girl with no face
(Ooh-ooh-ooh) You could learn a thing or two
(Ooh-ooh-ooh) Then you're gonna thank me
(Ooh-ooh-ooh) Say, "You look familiar, who are you?"
(Ooh-ooh-ooh) I'm the girl with no face
(Ooh-ooh-ooh) You could learn a thing or two
(Ooh-ooh-ooh) Then you're gonna thank me
(Ooh-ooh-ooh) Say, "I never met a girl like you"

Every minute of this is production perfection — filled with clever and beautiful textures, plus rich and full throated vocal performances. So simultaneously challenging and gorgeous and captivating. I feel suspended in each moment when I listen to this spective

I think it's difficult to write songs about something other than romantic love, and still be able to communicate the intensity with which those feelings can hit a person. Some of the entries on this album are fantastic examples of this niche. dani_bloop

Alvvays has always been great, but with this album they took it to the next level. Every one of these songs is lodged in my brain now, permanently (in a good way). s. moxley
